OJCS Set The Scene

In this assignment we had to describe OJCS for a filming crew. We described the actual school itself, the daily routine, and made especially sure that we included the 5 major senses in detail – smell, sight, touch, taste, sound – during the daily lives of the students at OJCS. We wrote 2 paragraphs. But, we had to write it how we saw OJCS, which I think is important to note. Then we edit our work.

I created 3 paragraphs of semi-detailed work.

We were working on descriptive writing, as well as practicing writing in general. Also, I feel like the teachers were probably wanting to see what us newish kids thought of the school.

I learned how little of the actual school I’ve seen. And how much the 5 senses add to detail.

I personally think this was some of my very good work, so I don’t think I can improve it.

OJCS Scene

What you can generally expect as soon as you come near the back entrance is a crush of people all trying to get in.  The students are making a lot of noise by screaming, and teachers are telling us to be careful because of COVID. Then, you go upstairs and there are about six classrooms. This floor smells slightly of books that are kind of old, mixed with the tiniest bit of mild fart, and the dash of outside air if you’re near the window. OJCS tastes like bricks and pint probably, but I don’t know why you want to know that. The hallway is filled with a bunch of lockers that contain bright, inspiring posters everywhere. The grade 7 main class is a grid of surprisingly smooth desks, with some smart boards and posters on the walls. At the front of the class is the big wooden teacher’s desk, and at the back of the class are some bookshelves.

If you go down to the basement for science or French, there is a maze of sorts that has some ice brick walls that were painted over, leaving the wall feeling smooth and bumpy, and smelling very slightly like paint. In the maze, there are all sorts of rooms and offices, with varying amounts of colour and cheerfulness. At the end of the maze, you find the science room. The science room is a big room with only 3 walls, a lot of tables, nice squishy chairs, a giant TV for learning, and a 3d printer. In the next room down there’s the french extended classroom. It’s similar to the main grade 7 classroom but has better seating. You, the movie person, are only allowed in those spots because people still have to learn (and that’s all I’ve ever seen.)

Now for what happens there; you need to know this to make the movie feel real. First period there is general studies, which is basically English. Sometimes someone will be on a Google Meet, and they will be up on the screen. Often we will find a simple prompt up on the board, and then we will open our computers and write, similarly to how I am doing so now. Similar things happen in other subjects. Gym is outside, and we bring our food. Then comes gym and lunch. After gym, we eat. After a pretty long 3 periods, it’s so nice to taste lunch. And, the food gives us energy for more school. Then we have French. Some people in extended bring their stuff outside, then go straight downstairs for french after snack. Personally, I go upstairs then bring my stuff down. Similar things happen for science if it’s after lunch. Speaking of lunch, we bring our food outside then eat, and have recess. We get to be in a tiny field, or on a tiny basketball court. But, that isn’t their fault. COVID just messes everything up. At the end of the day, we go home after waiting outside for our parents, or we walk home. (It depends on the day.)
